Volunteer
Come play a part in the celebration!

What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?
On Thursday, December 31, 2009, from 4 pm – 12 midnight, you're invited to
play a creative role in illuminating downtown Austin.
Hundreds of volunteers, 18 years of age or older, are needed this year
to help shine a creative light on downtown Austin’s transformation into an artistic
playground. The stage will be the city's
plazas, parks, streets, storefronts, and building facades. Building, bridges
and streets will become giant canvases. Indoor venues will be setting
for a palette of performing and visual arts.
You can help make all this happen by taking part for only
a few hours.
Opportunities
We offer a variety of exciting for you take advantage of
Artist Assistant – Artist assistants provide a helping hand
and staffing to the installations and workshops of the event.. They provide public information, and serve as
the eyes and ears for each installation.
In most cases, the job entails answering a handful of public questions,
maintaining order when needed, and ensuring the artist’s projects are left for
all the public to enjoy.
Technical Assistant – These are the people that work backstage in
helping bands and performers set up for their performances as well as helping
the stage managers run their stage. This
job requires some heavy lifting. Technical Assistants are the
backbone of the event. They provide the
much needed directional, lifting and moderate crowd control activities for the
event. You will serve as the eyes and
ears of the event, reporting back challenges and opportunities to the command
post.
Event Assistant - Event assistants rove the outdoor
footprint of the event. They provide
public information, and serve as the eyes, ears and brain of the “on street”
public installations. Even assistants are critical to the success of First Night, they provide
public information and carry event information and maps with them to help
answer visitor questions.
Grand Procession Marshals– Line up, organization, check in
and assemble in order of the parade participants. They serve as a strong ordering lead to the
First Night staff and City employees.
They help make sure participants are on time, in the right spot and
ready to go. Grand Procession Marshalls also ride along with the Grand Procession and make sure group spacing and timing flow evenly and consistently.
Environmental Ambassadors – Environmental
Ambassadors help show the public the many ways that they can stay green during
the festival by showing them where the recycling stations are.
Street Team - Street team members get the word out on how great First Night Austin will be this year. They help promote First Night Austin through the internet in Twitter and Facebook; in person by telling their friends and family and getting them involved; and by going out into the community by placing fliers. Street team members are the vital voice of First Night Austin.
Timing
Average shifts are 3 hours long, 12:00 - 3:00pm, 2:30 – 5:30 pm, 5:00 – 8:00 pm, and 8:00 -11:00pm. You can help out and still have time to enjoy other plans for New Year’s Eve, or stay downtown and become part of the life of First Night. There will be grand procession at 6 pm, and a midnight fireworks show on Lady Bird Lake.
First Night organizers will assign you based upon your interest and availability and contact you by mid-December with important information. Please note that, because of staffing needs, everyone might not be assigned to their area of interest.
Thank you for considering First Night Austin 2010 in your New Year’s Eve plans! Please encourage your friends and family to volunteer. We look forward to working with you in creating a truly unique and memorable night!
